Have you got your moped license and are you now eager to go touring on your own moped? That is of course also really enjoyable. When you have your first own means of transport, you suddenly get a lot of freedom. But a lot also suddenly comes your way. You have to arrange a number of things yourself. One of those things is taking out your own moped insurance . There is a big chance that this is the first time that you have to take out insurance yourself and this can be quite exciting, but don't worry! After reading this blog you will know exactly how to do that!

The legally required insurance

In the Netherlands, everyone is required to take out third-party liability insurance. Unfortunately, you don't have a choice in this. But that is also good for your own safety. If you unexpectedly cause an accident, you don't have to pay for the damage you cause to someone else. Those costs can be very high and it would be very annoying if you had to pay for it. That is why third-party liability insurance is required, but of course there are more options than just third-party liability insurance.

What does third party liability insurance cover?

The moped insurance WA only covers damage that you cause to others. So if you have an accident, in which you damage someone else's car, for example, then only the damage to that car is paid for by the insurance. Any damage that you incur to your moped or other belongings, you will still have to pay for yourself. The WA insurance does not cover damage due to theft, fire or storm damage. Damage to your own moped, helmets or accessories is also not covered by this insurance.

The WA+ or Limited Casco insurance

The WA+ insurance is an extension of the WA insurance. With WA+ insurance, the damage to others is paid, but also certain damage for yourself. WA+ insurance also covers the costs for theft, fire and storm damage and any damage to helmets and accessories. The damage to your own moped is not covered. This insurance is a good choice if you want optimal coverage for theft, which unfortunately often occurs with mopeds.

The All Risk insurance

The most comprehensive insurance you can have is the All Risk insurance. With an All Risk insurance you are protected for:

  • damage you cause to others

  • theft, fire and storm damage

  • damage to helmets, accessories and your own moped

Additional insurance

The options mentioned above are all basic insurances, but you can also expand your basic insurance with additional insurance. These insurances protect you in the event of a breakdown with the moped or a legal conflict. Additional insurance can be nice for your own peace of mind. You have a number of options for additional insurances.

Firstly, you have additional insurance for legal assistance in traffic. You are then insured for legal assistance if you become involved in a legal conflict with your moped.

You can also take out insurance for passengers. This insurance protects you against costs if you have an accident with the moped in which you or your passenger become permanently disabled or die.

Finally, you can take out additional insurance for breakdown assistance. This will provide you with a pick-up and delivery service if you break down somewhere and can no longer drive your moped.

In addition to the legally required third-party liability insurance, you still have many options. You must decide for yourself which insurances you may want to add and which insurance best suits your situation. Choose the insurance that gives you the most peace of mind and that makes you feel safe when you are on the road with your moped.
