Thereâs nothing more frustrating than an iPhone thatâs dead just when you need it most. Whether youâre on the go, having a long day at work, or simply donât have a power outlet nearby, a power bank can help. But is it really safe and effective to charge your iPhone via a power bank? And what should you look out for? In this article, weâll dive deep into these questions and help you discover whatâs a good match between your iPhone and a portable charger.
The Basics: How Does a Power Bank Work with an iPhone
A power bank is nothing more than an external battery. If you connect an iPhone via a suitable cable, it charges your device as if it were plugged into a wall socket. It is important that you use a cable that fits your iPhone, such as a Lightning cable or, for newer models such as the iPhone 15, a USB-C to USB-C cable. As long as the connection is correct and the output power of the power bank is sufficient, charging will work without any problems.
Most power banks provide power via a USB-A or USB-C port. Preferably choose a model that supports fast charging, such as Power Delivery (PD). This allows you to charge an iPhone much faster than with a standard 5-watt charger.
Is it safe to charge your iPhone with a power bank?
Yes, charging with a good iPhone power bank is just as safe as charging via the mains. The key lies in the quality of the device. If you choose an A-brand such as Anker, Belkin or Apple itself, you can count on built-in protection against overheating, short circuiting and overcharging. Apple's software also recognizes dangerous chargers and gives a message if an accessory is not certified.
Bad chargers or counterfeit products lack these protections. They sometimes deliver too much or too little voltage, which causes your battery to wear out faster or even damage your phone. Therefore, always look for quality marks such as CE and MFi (Made for iPhone), which indicate that the product meets strict requirements.
Power and capacity: which is right for your iPhone?
The capacity of a power bank, expressed in mAh (milliamp hours), determines how often you can charge your iPhone. A 5,000 mAh model will fully charge an iPhone 13 approximately once. A 10,000 mAh power bank will provide two to three full charges. If you're going on a trip or are on the road for a long time, 20,000 mAh is a smart choice. This allows you to charge multiple devices multiple times without having to recharge in between.
At least as important is the charging capacity, or how many watts the power bank delivers. For fast charging, an iPhone needs at least 18 to 20 watts. If you choose a model with Power Delivery via USB-C, you get the most out of your charging time. Within 30 minutes, your iPhone will be at 50% or more.
What if your iPhone doesn't charge via the power bank?
Sometimes charging doesn't work right away. Possible causes are a broken cable, a dirty or damaged port, or an incorrectly used connection. If you use a USB-C to USB-C cable while your power bank only recognizes USB-C as an input, you are actually trying to charge your power bank via your iPhone. That obviously doesn't work.
Look carefully at the symbols on your power bank. Often a small icon indicates whether a port is intended as input or output. Also try a different cable to rule out that the problem lies there. Does your iPhone give a warning that the accessory is not supported? Then there is a good chance that you are using a charger without Apple certification.
MagSafe and wireless convenience
Since the iPhone 12, Apple supports MagSafe: magnetic wireless charging. A MagSafe power bank clicks onto the back of your device without cables. This is ideal for on the go or when you have no room to put your phone down. Most MagSafe power banks charge with a maximum of 15 watts, which is reasonably fast for wireless charging.
There are also universal wireless power banks that work with Qi technology. Pay attention to the charging capacity. Many Qi chargers only deliver 5 to 10 watts, which is slower than wired charging. MagSafe is faster, more stable and better integrated into the Apple ecosystem.
The right power bank for your lifestyle
Not everyone has the same usage pattern. Do you often go out and do you have little space in your bag? Then a compact 5,000 mAh power bank is ideal. If you work a lot on the road, use navigation or stream videos, then a 10,000 or 20,000 mAh model offers more certainty. Also pay attention to extras such as built-in cables, digital screens for battery level or multiple charging ports.
Do you have an iPhone 15 or later? Then a USB-C power bank with fast charging is the most practical. Do you have an older iPhone with Lightning? Then choose a power bank with a USB-A port and use your existing cable.
